This weekend's post was pre-empted by a hurricane ...

My power is now back on, & I hope to be back posting next weekend.

  1. Some minor flooding, water came up into the garage and under the front door, but stopped before it got to the carpet. So some damaged property but my home is in decent shape.

I hear that there's a grocery store open and has been able to receive food trucks about 10 or 15 miles from here, if I take some back roads I hear there's even a way to get there. I might try the back roads this afternoon. There are only so many different ways you can prepare noodles, cheese, and tuna ... :)

So, Joe, you're into the power of prayer. I wanted to tell you: the second night was shaping up to be another unbelievably rainy night and there was no way we could take on that much water again without it going way into the houses, 'cause the creeks/bayous/etc were still way out of their banks from the first night. And it started coming down at that ridiculously-fast pace again, & I was talking to God & said, "I haven't really figured out which requests you take and which you don't. But if this is the kind of request you take, I'd be glad for help with this ... You've calmed storms before. I'm looking for calming the storm." That's a short enough prayer, it was stream-of-consciousness but it didn't take me long. Right as I got to the end of it the intense rain cut off like a switch. I went outside & looked, the water was half way up the driveway again, another 30 minutes of that and there would likely have been water in all the homes on the street. (Played "Joy to the World" on my piano, by flashlight, in gratitude.)

Now, I've talked to enough atheists, I know the objections: "So are you going to say he helped you but not everyone else, how heartless is that." But ... and I suspect I wasn't the only one in my neighborhood praying, y'know ... with that lull he helped thousands of people for miles and miles around. The next day when people came out of their houses again, I heard people mentioning how grateful they were for the break in the rain, gave the creeks time to go down some. We're built for heavy rain around here but every system has its max, needs time to reset.

And I've talked to enough atheists, "What about the people who died? You really going to say God is love, and God cares, and God helps in the storm?" You know, some day it will be my time to go, and who knows, it might be in a storm. When that day comes, I hope nobody tries to use my death to turn people, or use it as a lever for their hatred. All the same, I can't help but think that God heard me and my neighbors, and when he heard our prayers he helped more than just us.
